When to Visit The Netherlands

Though The Netherlands is a great time to visit year-round, visiting in June or between September and November ensures pleasant temperatures during the day and a plethora of activities you can do. In addition, these months tend to be off-season so you can make the most of the quieter streets.

Though if you want to see sprawling fields of different coloured tulips, then April is the month you should be booking your trip. If you want to experience the winter wonderland magic, then December through to March is the time you would want to travel.

Things to Know Before You Go

Language – Dutch is the main language of The Netherlands, though most locals are also comfortable speaking English or other languages they might’ve picked up throughout their lifetime. When strolling the charming cobblestoned streets, you might overhear a Dutch speaking a bit of German and French too.
Money – Euro (€) is the currency of The Netherlands, so it’s wise to have some on hand – either in cash or on a card. Coins come in 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, €1 and €2 values, while cash comes in €5, €10, €50, €100, €200 and €500 banknotes. Though if you would prefer to exchange your money in The Netherlands, there are banks and ATMs available for you to use.
Time zone and daylight – The Netherlands is in Central European Time (GMT +1) or Central European Summer Time (GMT +2) when summer is underway. This puts The Netherlands 10 hours behind Sydney, nine hours ahead of Los Angeles and one hour in front of London. Daylight in The Netherlands can change drastically depending on the season you’re travelling in. In the peak of summer, daylight can be as long as 16 hours, but when in the depths of winter you can see as little as seven hours of daylight instead.
Electricity – The Netherlands uses a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. They have Type C and F sockets, meaning you can use either type of plug or even a Type E plug while travelling.
