When to Visit Sicily

As Sicily has a unique range of sights and experiences, choosing when to travel depends on what you want to do. If you’re wanting to relax on the golden Sicilian beaches, then July through to August is the optimum time for travelling.

But if you’re more of a museum or historical sights kind of traveller, then the winter season is perfect. You’ll be spending your exploration time indoors, and with the reduced crowds you won’t feel too overwhelmed.

Spring is also a great time for outdoor exploration, as it tends to be a mild 20ºC to 25ºC during the day.

Things to Know Before You Go

Here are some important details that you should know before you go:

  • Language – While Italian is predominantly spoken throughout Sicily, there are some natives that also speak Sicilian. Though there are some similarities between the two languages, there is a Sicilian dialect that locals speak, so keep an ear out for any unique Sicilian phrases you can use to impress your friends at home.
  • Money – Sicily uses the euro (€) for its currency, so you will need to use euro coins or cash. Coins come in 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, €1 and €2 denominations, while cash comes in values of €5, €10, €50, €100, €200 and €500. Some places may accept credit card payments.
  • Time zone and daylight – Sicily is in Central European Time (GMT +1) or Central European Summer Time (GMT +2) during summer. This means that Sicily is usually 10 hours behind Sydney, nine hours ahead of Los Angeles and one hour in front of London. In the summer months, you can expect up to 15 hours of sunlight. Though when winter comes around, expect up to nine hours of daylight and frigid temperatures.
  • Electricity – Sicily uses a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. You can use a Type L or Type F plug while travelling to charge your devices.
