Austria

Austria is a mountainous delight full of spectacular Baroque-era cities – perfect for inclusion on any European tours. The cities featured on our Austria tours are elegant and inspiring, with the Viennese coffee houses and traditional bistros as highly regarded as the impressive churches, cathedrals and abbeys.

You’ll travel through deep, forested valleys, around scenic lakes and along winding roads cut right into the mountainside as you progress on your Austrian tour. Many holidaymakers find the stunning natural beauty of this alpine wonderland is just as enthralling as the historic cities.

Touring Austria by Coach

Austria is one of Europe’s most wonderful holiday destinations – any time here is sure to leave an indelible imprint on you. However, to really get the most of your time in this stunning country, an Austrian adventure with Albatross Tours is the best way to go. This is because we stay in cities longer and travel with smaller numbers than most groups, ensuring your holiday here is a more personal and leisurely experience.

Our experienced Tour Managers have created itineraries that capture all the best highlights and secret delights that Austria has to offer. On top of this, their advice can help you make the best decisions when choosing how to spend your free time in the country’s various cities and towns.

As English isn’t as widespread in Austria as it is in some other European countries, having a Tour Manager to overcome the language barrier is an invaluable asset. It’s also wonderfully convenient to have your journey and bookings prearranged for you; self-guided holidays are too often tainted by these frustrating tasks.

Yet perhaps the best thing about touring Austria with Albatross Tours, is the people you will meet: like-minded travellers who are just as keen to explore this country’s wonders as you are. We regularly witness lifelong friendships being forged between our customers as they bond over discovering new sights and experiencing Austrian culture as part of the same group.

When to visit Austria

The summer months traditionally see the largest number of Austria tours passing through the country. Days between May and October are reliably warm, with temperatures climbing as high as 35°C during the season’s peak in August. Various regions experience different climates depending on their location related to the Alps, so wise travellers will pack an extra layer or two even if visiting in summertime.

While the winters of Austria are as chilly and windy as you would expect from such a mountainous country, this shouldn’t deter you from considering a tour during December through to January. There’s something incomparably magical about touring Austria around Christmas time; the markets, the festivities, the joyous atmosphere – it all makes braving the colder climate completely worth it. Needless to say, winter sports enthusiasts should also lean towards visiting around this time.

Helpful Hints

Here are some important details that you should know before you go:

  • Money – As Austria is part of the European Union, its currency is the euro (€); any cash purchases you make during your tour in Austria will need to be done in euros. Coins come in 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, €1 and €2 denominations, while banknotes come in values of €5, €10, €50, €100, €200 and €500. Larger establishments will typically accept credit cards, but you may need some cash for transactions at small shops or market stalls. Fortunately, ATMs are plentiful throughout Austria. Leaving a tip of around 10% is customary for restaurants, bars and taxis.
  • Time zone and daylight – Austria runs on Central European Standard Time (GMT +1). This places it one hour ahead of London, five hours ahead of New York, and 10 hours behind Sydney. In Austria’s summer months of June to September, daylight lasts for 16 hours from 5am to 9pm. In the depths of winter around December, this daylight is halved from 7:30am to 4pm.
  • Electricity – Austria uses a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. This is transmitted using two types of plugs – Type C and F, both of which use two round pins of similar designs.
