Discover Puglia, Italy

If you’re planning your next trip to Italy, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a route. As you plan, one special region to lock in is the humble, laid-back region of Puglia. Located along the south-east side of Italy, Puglia boasts Tuscan charm and excellent hospitality. With an abundance of exploration opportunities, this warm and inviting area is perfect for new and seasoned tourists. But where should you go on your Puglian adventure?

Alberobello

For those who want to add a touch of whimsy to your Italian trip, then Alberobello is the place to visit!

This small, Italian town boasts narrow, hilly streets, and white houses that are reminiscent of those found in fairy tales. Roofs are cone-shaped and, on the odd occasion, feature unique markings painted in white. These small, unique historical homes are called trulli, and are the key defining feature of this quaint town. While the trulli are a core part of what makes this city remarkable, there are a number of things you can do while you’re here that can leave a positive, lasting impression. If you’re a wine aficionado, then make sure to swing past the Cantina Museo Albea – the Museum of Wine. Here, you can learn about the rich history of this beloved beverage, all the while taking in the charming sights and sipping on some of the finest Italian wines.

Lecce

Next up on our list is the archaic wonder that is Lecce – one of the most beautiful cities in Puglia. Despite the city’s small size, Lecce features plenty of opportunities for ample exploration.
If you’re an ancient history buff, then you’re in luck! Lecce is home to an ancient Roman amphitheatre. Once seating up to an impressive 14,000 spectators across its two tiers, only the lower tier remains today. Having said that, be sure to see if there are any concerts happening in this ancient arena.
The Lecce cathedral is a sight to behold, especially when it’s illuminated at night. Originally built in 1144, then rebuilt hundreds of years later, the cathedral embodies the distinct and decorative baroque style that Lecce is known for. You can also pay a small fee to go up the elevator for a bird’s eye view of Lecce, right from the cathedral’s bell tower.

Polignano a Mare

Perched high atop the limestone cliffs and overlooking the clear waters of the Adriatic, Polignano a Mare is the perfect stop on your Italian trip if you’re looking for a beachy retreat. Though this town is small, its picturesque streets and scenery allow for ample discovery. You can grab an Italian coffee and wander the streets, maybe stopping by the beach. Or you can buy some of the town’s tantalising ice cream, which is the perfect treat on a hot summer night. The cliffs that overlook the crystal-clear waters give thrill-seekers the opportunity to do some free-form diving. Though should you go down this route, ensure that all people dive safely and respect the rules of the beach.
